Supervision in hypnotherapy

Its usefulness

[up]. At the beginning of the profession, the hypnotherapist has a limited experience and few clients. Thus, as soon as (s)he works with clients on a regular basis (even part-time, but regularly), then (s)he has the right and the duty of receiving advices and support from a qualified colleague. This help is the supervision, which is regulated by the professional association that the hypnotherapist has joined. Every reliable hypnotherapy association has several membership levels, for example: licentiate (the entry level, for those who are beginning their profession), regular member (the typical hypnotherapist), and accredited member (very experienced, supervisor, trainer). Without supervision, it is impossible to upgrade the membership level within the association, no matter how many years ago one has joined it. Therefore, a member that doesn't apply for supervision or that doesn't receive clients remains stuck at the same level of membership. Finally, a fresh diplomate that works regularly without supervision can be downgraded to the non-professional level of affiliate, and then removed from the public listings of the association. These safeguards protect the final consumer and the professional association from certain people who are diplomate but irresponsible. Copyright (C) Alberto Torelli.

How to do it

[up]. Every member with low or medium experience should receive a formal (written supervision form) differential supervision (supervisors more expert than supervisees); the members with high experience can receive informal peer supervision. In any case, the supervision is valid only if done in real time (phone, tele-conference are ok; email or fax are not acceptable). Full-time practitioners must reach 10 meetings per year of supervision, while part-time practitioners (5 or less then 5 sessions weekly) can get a minimum of 5 meetings per year. In group supervision the only acceptable method is face to face, with no more than 10 participants. The fee should be a little more than that of a normal session (because the supervisor must write a report to the association), but the diplomates from this school will benefit from a reduced fee (see below).

When to do it

[up]. It is better to be supervised regularly along the year rather than all at once. INDIVIDUAL SUPERVISION: by phone, ALWAYS available, on appointment, 60 euro/hour. GROUP SUPERVISION: available if requested by at least 2 persons (30 euro/hour); the dates will be set accordingly. In both cases: registration by email request and bank money transfer no less than 10 days before the date; if necessary, further details will be sent by email to each enrolled supervisee together with a written confirmation.
